Ageru & Kureru & Morau (To give X To get)

When to use Ageru

meaning: To give from speaker's perspective

YOU are giving or doing SOMETHING for SOMEONE-ELSE

(watashi wa) Yamada-san ni puresento o ageta

When to use Kureru

meaning: To give from receiver's perspective. From third point of view, speakers speaks from the receiver's point of view

SOMEONE-ELSE is giving or doing SOMETHING for YOU

Yamada-san wa watashi ni puresento o kureta

Kuruma o (watashi ni) katte-kureru no?

When to use Morau

meaning: to get, to recieve

destination particle: + kara

Specificity: Only you can receive, so moratta means you got something

watashi wa yamada-san kara puresento o moratta

Special case (others receiving from you)

sono hon wa watashi kara moratta no yo

So basically

I give somebody == Yaru(to lower status, arrogant), Ageru, Sashiageru (Humble)

Somebody gives to me == Kureru, Kudasaru (polite)

Ageru & Kureru & Morau (Auxiliary Verb)

Do favor to somebody, for someone's sake

Grammar: Vte + Kureru

Example

Chichi wa camera o katte-kureta

Father bought me a camera

Chichi wa watashi o nagusamete-kureta

Father consoled me

watashi ni X oshiete-kurete-iru

.... kindly teaching me X

It seems all 3 words work in this grammar point similarly too

Note

Kureru can never be used for myself or as if did something to someone close to me!

Also if person is direct object, watashi ni must be omitted

haha wa (!watashi ni) watashi o nagusamete-kureta

If somebody works for you, no tame ni (for the sake of) is used

minna wa watashi no tame ni hatarateite-kureta (Everybody worked for my sake)

Specific

In general sentences like "Somebody taught me ..., lent me ...., bought me ...." are expressed with Vte+kureru form, unlike english
